Did you know that a woodworm is not a separate species? The word actually refers to the larvae of wood-boring beetles, which can cause serious damage to wooden structures within your property.
In the UK, there are four main types of woodworm: the larvae of furniture beetles, death watch beetles, longhorn beetles and powderpost beetles.
There are three key signs to look out for that suggest you need to call in woodworm pest control services. The first is holes. Small, circular holes on the surface of wooden elements of your property may indicate places where adult beetles have emerged.
The second is frass: a term used to describe the faeces of insect larvae. It doesn’t look as you’d expect for pest faeces, however – here, you’re looking for powdery dust around any holes in wood.
The third is wood damage. In addition to visible holes, you may also spot that some wooden structures have been weakened by woodworm activity, or that they are crumbling around the edges.
Adult beetles crawl into cracks in wooden structures on your property and lay their eggs. These hatch as larvae (woodworm), which eat their way through the wood to emerge as adults.
If the wood is left untreated, the adult beetles will reenter the structure to lay their eggs and the process will start again, with the new larvae boring new holes through the wood.
Over time, this means that huge numbers of tunnels can be formed, weakening the timber significantly. The problem is even more serious if woodworm are boring through structural timbers: in the most serious cases, the building’s occupants may even be asked to leave while the problem is being resolved.
For this reason, it’s vital that signs of woodworm are detected and treated early, preventing further infestations and costly repairs.
